The fashion in USSR in the fifties was the fashion of the post-war era. People overall were not as much concerned about looking on the modern edge with the nicest clothing, because these were difficult post-war times and putting food on the table for families was more of a priority for most. Thus, the fashion portrayed more of a worker type practical clothing to reflect the those times. This can be seen from historical photographs of the large cities in USSR in 1950's. Sixties were a bit different. Since the scientific progress took off and life started picking up, soviet cinema and movies started affecting the fashion industry a bit by showing how soviet people should dress up. Also, west fashion had some influence on people. Movies of those times also reflect this view by showing the underground economy of the forbidden jeans culture and all-that-belongs-to-the-west speculation culture. Seventies and eighties were pretty stagnant in the fashion. Since most factories in USSR were atuned to the production of the same typical clothing, nothing much has changed. More advanced speculators were bringing nicer looking clothing from the GDR, Poland and Hungary. American Jeans were very much in demand and the price for a pair would equal to ones monthly salary back then. The story is a bit different for between the end of eighties and perestroika times. West fashion had significant influence on cooperatives that started producing all sorts of bad quality but modern looking clothing. Small businesses of those times started routine travelling trips to Turkey and the western europe and reselling these clothes at inflated price in the USSR. The end of 20th century and post-soviet era brought in many western fashion companies and the overall look of the population no longer was much different from the rest of the western world. However, even today for most of the population of our country (except maybe Moscow) it is relatively hard to keep up the frequently implemented and changed fashion clothing that remains expensive and out of reach for most people.
